Just the thought of writing a thesis scares me...but intrigues me as well. I suppose play therapy could be interesting (teaching through sports activities, even pickup, spur of the moment games could qualify).
Also, I speak in Korean to my Korean students when I can't get my point across in English. This is limited because of a small vocabulary, but sometimes I think it's beneficial to explain things in Korean if they can't understand the description/command in English. Then again, sometimes I think it's a cop-out. I'm on the fence on that one...any suggestions?

Since I know the level of your university students' English level (very basic- ex What's your name? My name is____), I don't see a problem in using Korean in the classroom. English only seems more effective with young children (Critical Period) or with older students of a medium to high level.
ReplyDeleteYes, perhaps you are right, Austen. I was often reprimanded for speaking too much Korean at an English immersion kindergarten. But it seems to be working better in a university setting because my students are at a basic English proficiency level.
ReplyDeleteI'm probably going to be stoned but I'm a big believer in 'No Korean' in an ESL or EFL classroom. I was lucky enough to start three languages while in middle school, high school and uni with teachers who, while not native speakers, were fluent and practiced language immersion in their classrooms. I was so nervous at first because I NEVER thought I would understand as much as the teacher seemed to expect of such rank beginners; but, in retrospect, only listening to as well as only being allowed to speak in the second language for that hour (or whatever timeframe) increased my understanding of the language exponentially in a relatively short time.
